Project Description
This project focused on diagnosing and repairing a faulty steering angle sensor (SAS) on a 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI. The client reported issues including steering instability, traction control warning lights, and intermittent EPS (Electric Power Steering) errors. These faults had triggered the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system, reducing vehicle safety and causing steering irregularities. A permanent fix was required to restore full sensor accuracy and stability system functionality.
Project Solutions
A complete diagnostic was performed using VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System), and the following solutions were implemented:
• Conducted a full fault code scan, confirming the steering angle sensor malfunction (G85)
• Inspected the clock spring and steering column wiring harness for continuity and physical damage
• Removed and replaced the faulty steering angle sensor with an OEM-grade replacement unit
• Recalibrated the new sensor using VCDS to align it with the vehicle's center position and reset all related modules
• Cleared stored fault codes and performed steering system adaptation through basic settings
• Conducted a road test with real-time data logging to verify proper ESC and steering function
Project Challenge
The main challenge was accessing and removing the sensor, which is integrated into the steering column module and mounted behind the airbag and steering wheel. Additional care was required to:
• Safely disable and remove the airbag module without triggering any fault codes
• Handle sensitive CAN bus connections to avoid introducing new electronic issues
• Ensure proper steering wheel alignment post-installation to avoid offset calibration errors
Project Result
Following repair and calibration:
• The steering angle sensor was restored to full functionality
• ESC and traction control warnings were cleared
• The vehicle regained stability control accuracy and consistent steering responsiveness
• No further faults were detected in the EPS, ESC, or ABS modules
• The client reported improved handling and confidence when driving
